The emergence of political figures like Donald Trump and George Santos goes to show that in many ways lying has become acceptable in American politics. One reason for this is the proliferation of news sources and the spread of social media misinformation, making it difficult for the average person to determine what is true and what is not. Political polarization and divisiveness also encourage politicians to lie to win elections or advance their agendas, as many believe that the ends can justify the means. Many voters also seem willing to overlook lies if they further their beliefs. They excuse the falsehoods because they believe the people they support can push the agenda they want to see implemented. While it’s going to be impossible to completely eliminate lying from American politics, it would be nice to see politicians actually get held accountable for a change when they get caught.
