The outsized media coverage of Gabby Petito’s death in Wyoming has highlighted the public fixation on missing and murdered White women. Indigenous activists for years have been drawing attention to the disproportionate violence facing indigenous women. In Wyoming alone, where Petito’s remains were found, hundreds of indigenous women have gone missing and were found to be murdered over the past decade.
