Democrats have finally passed their $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill through Congress. And now, President Biden has signed the bill. The House of Representatives passed the same bill that the Senate approved over the weekend. The legislation got zero support from Republican lawmakers in the two chambers. Polling shows that three-quarters of the country support the bill and yet not a single Republican legislator would vote for it. GOP lawmakers were fine approving stimulus deals under a president in their party but now they want to grandstand and obstruct because Biden and the Democrats are in charge. Getting this win on the board is crucial in demonstrating that Democrats can act without a single Republican helping them out.
The nearly two trillion dollar American Rescue Plan Act is filled with excellent provisions that will do a lot to get working and middle-class Americans back on their feet. It includes checks up to $1,400 for people earning up to $80,000 per year. There will be enhanced unemployment benefits of $300 per week through September 6th. The child tax credit will increase to $3,000 per child and $3,600 for kids 5 and younger. In addition, the bill will provide $350 billion for state, local, and tribal governments and $130 billion for primary and secondary schools. There are also funds to deal with the virus itself, including $14 billion for vaccine distribution. This is arguably the biggest legislative achievement for Joe Biden and Democrats since taking power and now they can focus on the next agenda items.
