The future keeps looking bleaker and bleaker for Trump ally and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. There is a new report from an Arizona publication that Giuliani called an election official about getting the state’s election challenge “fixed up” so that Trump could win the state despite getting fewer votes than Joe Biden. The Arizona Republic revealed on Sunday that Rudy called Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates (not the Microsoft guy) on December 24, 2020 to introduce himself as Trump’s lawyer. It’s reported that he left the following voicemail: “Bill, it’s Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s lawyer. If you get a chance, would you please give me a call? I have a few things I’d like to talk over with you. Maybe we can get this thing fixed up. You know, I really think it’s a shame that Republicans sort of are both in this, kind of, situation. And I think there may be a nice way to resolve this for everybody.”
What’s remarkable about Giuliani’s message was just how brazen he was about wanting to shore up the election for Trump. Rudy is asking for a favor like a mobster would, but not in the way that a mobster would. He barely even used any coded language and was dumb enough to deliver his coercive message via voicemail. Gates has since said he never returned Rudy's call and that “we don’t do what is easy, we do what is right.” Perhaps there’s some chance of Giuliani facing legal consequences for doing this but it’s unlikely at this point. Federal investigators appear to be a lot more interested in his alleged work in Ukraine, which has led to a recent search and seizure at the former mayor’s home and office in New York City. Now, Rudy finds himself possibly getting into more trouble and the 45th president is not around in any substantive way to help him.
