According to Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley took action to limit Donald Trump from launching nuclear weapons after the then-president lost the 2020 race to Joe Biden. The reporting is coming to light in their upcoming book Peril and the authors confirmed that Milley “was certain that Trump had gone into a serious mental decline in the aftermath of the election, with Trump now all but manic, screaming at officials and constructing his own alternate reality about endless election conspiracies.” The Joint Chiefs Chairman reportedly held a secret meeting on January 8th, just two days after the Capitol Insurrection to review the process for what to do if military action was ordered by Trump. Milley told people at the meeting not to take orders from anyone unless Milley himself was involved and then went around the room to get verbal confirmation from everyone asking if they understood. It is not normal for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to usurp the president’s power in such a way, but neither was the administration of Donald Trump, especially during his radical lame duck period. If Trump wanted to launch an attack, he still could have done so, but it would have required him first firing Milley and everyone else who would have stepped in his way. For those who think an American president wouldn’t do such a thing, they clearly weren’t paying attention to Trump’s message to the rioters he called “patriots” on January 6th.
