In one of the most embarrassing Fox News segments of all time, a reporter was sent down to the southern border to cover the so-called “crisis” of migrants making the journey though Mexico to cross into the United States. The reporter is Griff Jenkins, who came across a random guy sitting in a shallow part of the Rio Grande. Jenkins assumed the man to be a “smuggler” before speaking to him and approached him to ask a few questions. When the man indicated he doesn’t speak English, Jenkins tried using his low-level Spanish skills live on air. The man seemed disinterested in speaking to him and appeared overwhelmed by everything that was going on but still engaged with the Fox reporter politely. When asked why he helps bring people across the border, the man simply replied by saying he wants to help people achieve the American dream.
Despite the exchange not going well from the start due to the language barrier, Jenkins got closer to the man who was still sitting in the Rio Grande because as he explained, that’s as far as he could legally go. Jenkins, in broken Spanish, kept trying to ask the man if he had heard Biden’s statements on the border and whether he thinks the border is open or closed. It was clear that the Fox reporter barely could understand what he was being told, so he pressed on instead about how profitable it is to help people make the journey across the border. Eventually, the host of the Fox show at the time, Neil Cavuto, couldn’t take it anymore and cut away from some of the worst Spanish ever spoken on live television. It was unclear what Fox was trying to accomplish with this segment, but it made the man sitting in the water look really sympathetic, while Griff Jenkins and Fox didn’t look so spectacular.
