The US Food and Drug Administration announced full approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine. Previously, the Pfizer vaccine was approved only under an emergency use authorization. Now that there has been enough time since the original clinical trials, and tens of millions of Americans having taken the vaccines with only occasional, rare reports of complications, the FDA felt confident enough to give the vaccine full approval. The same go-ahead will probably come for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines in the coming months. The announcement from the FDA is significant, as it will make businesses and government agencies feel more comfortable about requiring their employees and customers take the vaccine. The Pentagon has already announced that taking the vaccine will soon become a requirement for all servicemembers. The news is also significant because in polls, vaccine skeptics have reported that the number one thing that would convince them to get the vaccine is full FDA approval. Whether or not these vaccine hesitant individuals will actually stick to that remains to be seen, but it would not be surprising to see an uptick in vaccination rates based off this news in the coming weeks.
