Donald Trump Jr. said on Twitter over the weekend that he trusts comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan more than he trusts infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci. The tweet read, “I trust @joergoan much more than I trust Anyhony Fauci. [sic]”
Sadly, this one tweet is emblematic of a much larger problem in the United States, especially as it pertains to the right wing. Many conservatives treat academia and expertise with disdain while embracing the opinions of laypeople. As Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, Dr. Fauci has had a long career in medicine. He is obviously a better source of scientific information than Joe Rogan. But people like Don Jr. see Dr. Fauci’s years of experience running NIAID as a reason to distrust him.
This anti-intellectual logic helps explain why COVID cases and deaths have become so out of control in the United States.
