DEBUNKED: Gun Violence Is a "Democrat City" Problem

One of the common retorts from the right whenever the left tries to do something about mass shootings in this country is that gun violence is an issue that is most present in Democratic-run cities. Much of this has to do with how there tends to be more crime in more densely populated areas and these also happen to be places where people on the left tend to live. But the correlation does not equal a causation, since the safest cities also tend to be run by Democrats. What often gets overlooked is that the Democratic-run cities with high gun violence tend to be in Republican-run states that have lax gun laws. Some examples include St. Louis, Missouri; Birmingham, Alabama; and Dayton, Ohio. The city of Chicago, which Republicans love to point to, is in the blue state of Illinois, but it’s just a short drive away from more conservative areas like Indiana and Wisconsin where guns can be more easily obtained. The right loves to mislead people by using this “violent Democratic-run cities” talking point, but in reality it doesn’t stand up to the slightest bit of scrutiny.
