Comparing and Contrasting the Trials of Arbery’s Suspected Killers and Rittenhouse

Sonali Kolhatkar speaks with Jody Armour, the Roy P. Crocker Professor of Law at the University of Southern California. He is the author of Negrophobia and Reasonable Racism: The Hidden Costs of Being Black in America and N*gga Theory: Race, Language, Unequal Justice, and the Law. He is also a Soros Justice Senior Fellow of The Open Society Institute’s Center on Crime, Communities and Culture, and he is the Race and Criminal Justice Correspondent for Rising Up With Sonali.

Eighteen-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse stood trial for his role last August in the shooting deaths of two men, Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, and for injuring a third man named Gaige Grosskreutz in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse had joined counter protesters at a Black Lives Matter action against the police shooting of a Black man named Jacob Blake who was left paralyzed. As of this recording jury deliberations have begun.

Meanwhile, the suspected White killers of a Black man named Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia are on trial. Three men, Travis McMichael, his father Gregory McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan Jr. are facing murder charges for an incident that left Arbery dead and shocked the nation last April. The judge in the case has just rejected the defendants’ request for a mistrial.
