Colombia, Once a Conservative Bastion, Goes Left

For the first time ever, Colombia, the third most populous nation in Latin America, has elected a president who is not conservative. The stalwart U.S. ally has just chosen the former mayor of Bogota, Gustavo Petro, as the leader in a runoff election. His running mate, Francia Márquez, has become the nation’s first Afro-Colombian Vice President.
