The United States is falling behind in the race for a coronavirus vaccine. The United Kingdom and Canada have beaten the US in obtaining approved vaccines. The UK is already starting to vaccinate elderly members of its population and Canada’s health department gave the Pfizer mRNA vaccine emergency approval yesterday. It should only be a number of days before the US FDA announces its approval of the Pfizer vaccine, but there is no guarantee. Other countries are better set up to receive large quantities of vaccine doses from Pfizer because they made deals over the summer to get more doses. The United States, which passed on the opportunity, may have to wait until summer to get enough Pfizer doses to vaccinate the general population.
Meanwhile, coronavirus in the United States is totally out of control. Several days this week saw between 2,9000 and 3,000 deaths, which is inconceivably tragic. This is the equivalent of a 9/11 every single day. The vaccine is not going to be widely available in the US in time to mitigate this fall wave. Certain populations, like the elderly and medical professionals, could get it sooner, but there won’t be enough for everyone. There is no telling how bad the virus could get with the full effects of Thanksgiving travel not even being seen yet, and more holiday gatherings upcoming.
