Can a Progressive Carbon Tax Make Flying Sustainable?

A new study published in Environmental Research Letters has quantified the impact of air travel on the climate and concluded that it contributes “approximately 4% to observed human-induced global warming.” Although only a small percentage of people fly, wealthy people disproportionately take advantage of the luxury of air travel. There is now a growing consensus that governments must address the climate impacts of flight.
