The Russian invasion of Ukraine provides an opportunity to reflect on propaganda and disinformation. It’s very common for Americans to think those in dictatorial regimes are gullible or naïve for believing everything told to them by their leaders and state-run media. The truth, however, is that many Americans fall for this same type of stuff. For example, the vast majority of Donald Trump supporters believe he was the true winner of the 2020 election and that the race was rigged by Joe Biden and the Democrats. Another example is the American invasion of Iraq. A study done by PIPA found that those who watched Fox News had a high likelihood of believing Saddam Hussein was responsible for the 9/11 attacks, that weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, and that the world approved of the American intervention. A significant portion of a population can be duped by the right propaganda and that’s true for places like the United States as it is for places like Russia and North Korea.
