Alex Jones has been ordered to pay $49.3 million to the parents of a Sandy Hook victim in the first of several defamation lawsuits against the Infowars host. Jones was found liable by default months ago since he did not cooperate with the proceedings, triggering a trial to determine how much exactly he was on the hook for. The verdict was that he would have to pay $4.1 million in compensatory damages and $45.2 million in punitive damages to the parents of the late Jesse Lewis. Jones repeatedly spread lies about the families of Sandy Hook victims, including saying they were crisis actors and that the shooting was a hoax perpetrated by the government to confiscate people’s guns. How much Jones will actually have to pay the Lewis family will depend on his bankruptcy proceedings and caps on punitive damages in the state of Texas, but he will certainly be in the hole for a significant amount of money over this.
