51 Years After Chicanx Moratorium, Demands for Justice Persist

Sonali Kolhatkar speaks with Carlos Montes, co-founder of the Brown Berets.

Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputies fatally shot and killed a man named David Ordaz Jr. outside his East LA home earlier this year. He was holding a knife in his hand when he was hit by a barrage of a dozen bullets that continued to be fired even after he fell onto the sidewalk. Family members of Mr. Ordaz and others killed by law enforcement in Southern California will join my guest Carlos Montes this week in a news conference taking place ahead of the 51st Chicanx Moratorium which will be marked on August 29th.

The original Chicano Moratorium took place on August 29th, 1970 in East LA and at the time was considered the largest Latino anti-war and social justice protest in the nation. Today, the tradition continues as Latinos and Chicanos remain disproportionately impacted by police brutality and other social ills.

Carlos Montes is a nationally respected leader in the Chicano, immigrant rights, and anti-war movements. He was a co-founder of the Brown Berets, a Chicano working class youth organization in the United States in the late 1960s and 1970s. The Brown Berets were inspired by and often compared to the Black Panther Party.
