Donald Trump is running for reelection acting as if someone else is president right now. He’s using language that suggests other people are currently in office and if we give him the chance to lead, he’ll be able to solve all of society’s ills. The problem is that Trump is actually president right now and he’s unwilling and incapable of carrying out the necessary measures to improve the state of the country. The most obvious example of Trump using this tactic is on crime. The Trump campaign shows videos of violence in the streets of American cities acting like that’s what the country will be like under a Joe Biden administration. The reality is that that’s how the country is now under Trump’s administration.
It’s clear that Donald Trump has to use this strategy because the “Keep America Great” slogan isn’t going to work with hundreds of thousands dead from a pandemic and tens of millions out of work. Trump has assessed that he has to run as the outsider in order to win, like he did in 2016. Even though this strategy doesn’t pass a basic sniff test, there are going to be people who are convinced by it.
