The investigation by the January 6th House Select Committee found that social media platforms like Twitter did indeed play a role in the 2020 election but not in the way that Republicans claim. The panel found that Twitter and other platforms gave preferential treatment to Donald Trump and far-right extremists out of fear of backlash, contradicting the narrative promoted by right-wingers that social media platforms were targeting conservatives unfairly. For months now, the right has been complaining about undue influence by social media sites to interfere in the 2020 election in ways that would help the Biden campaign. But this report provides evidence to the contrary. The evidence collected by the committee was written up in a 122-page memo that was circulated among the committee members, but the leaders of the committee decided not to delve into the topic in their final report. Sadly, this story is getting far less attention than the “Twitter files” did and people will still believe social media sites were helping the left at every turn.
