Donald Trump is threatening that his followers will do “terrible things” if the FBI investigation into his alleged wrongdoing continues. Trump did an interview with Fox News Digital and said, “The country is in a very dangerous position. There is tremendous anger, like I've never seen before, over all of the scams, and this new one — years of scams and witch hunts, and now this.” He went on to say, “People are so angry at what is taking place. Whatever we can do to help — because the temperature has to be brought down in the country. If it isn’t, terrible things are going to happen.” With these statements, Trump is clearly using coded language to threaten the DOJ and FBI. While he doesn’t have much leverage with respect to the investigation itself, he does have leverage by way of his millions of dedicated followers, some of whom would be willing to commit violence in his name as we saw from the events of January 6, 2021. There have already been examples of violence over the FBI raid, from Washington DC to Cincinnati, and Trump will have no interest in deescalating his supporters if the investigation results in a criminal prosecution.
