On Sunday, Jair Bolsonaro supporters in Brazil stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace, demanding the return of their candidate. The insurrection was eerily similar to what happened on January 6th, 2021 in the United States. Some of the supporters of Bolsonaro, who lost the election to leftist rival President Lula da Silva, called for a military intervention to either restore Bolsonaro to power or oust Lula from the presidency. It took hours for control of the buildings in Brasilia's Power Square to be re-established, with hundreds of participants arrested. President Lula accused Bolsonaro of encouraging the uprising and signed a decree for the federal government to take control of security in the federal district. Bolsonaro, meanwhile, was in Flordia during the protests. The events in Brazil are arguably a result of the lack of consequences faced by Trump and his supporters following the 2020 election in the United States.
