Day one of the hearings on the January 6th Capitol riots was yesterday and the public learned quite a few new things about the lead-up and events of that day. The committee shared video footage, some for the first time ever, of the riots themselves, clearly demonstrating this was no peaceful protest or tourist visit as the right would have people believe. Committee Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney asserted that Donald Trump approved of the idea by the rioters that Mike Pence should be hanged for refusing to go along with his plan to discount Biden’s electoral votes. She said, “aware of the rioters’ chants to hang Mike Pence, the president responded with this sentiment: ‘maybe our supporters have the right idea.’ Mike Pence ‘deserves it.’” The hearings also included testimony from a documentarian covering the Proud Boys and one of the Capitol Police officers who was overwhelmed by rioters on that day. Day one of the hearings was hugely damaging to Trump and his allies and it’s hard to predict what will come next in the upcoming days.
