In a new article, Keith Naughton, an opinion contributor for The Hill, argues that Donald Trump has a lot to be concerned with as he again tries to win the Republican Party nomination. Naughton points out that despite the fact Trump is the only candidate who has announced so far, he’s not enjoying a wide margin of support in the polls. The former president isn’t scoring 50% against people who aren’t declared candidates yet like Ron DeSantis. The counterpoint to this is that a similar situation happened in 2016 when Trump would register more support than any other candidate but not a majority. Ultimately, Trump was able to pull off the victory in the primary anyway in 2016 so he might be able to do it again in 2024. The next problem Naughton points out is that Trump has nothing new to offer and is just recycling his same old talking points. Finally, it’s unknown how possible charges against the former president could affect his support among a Republican electorate. This is shaping up to be a contentious GOP primary and it’s anyone’s guess as to who will come out ahead.
