Donald Trump had an explosive reaction to the House January 6th Committee’s decision to refer him for criminal prosecution. The failed former president took to Truth Social and tried to put a positive spin on the situation. He said, “These folks don’t get it that when they come after me, people who love freedom rally around me. It strengthens me. What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.” Trump then tried claiming he was already exonerated of any possible charges having to do with the Capitol riots since he was acquitted by the Senate in his second impeachment trial. He wrote, “The Fake charges made by the highly partisan Unselect Committee of January 6th have already been submitted, prosecuted, and tried in the form of Impeachment Hoax # 2. I WON convincingly. Double Jeopardy anyone!” Of course, an impeachment proceeding is a political trial, and this referral has to do with what could become a criminal trial. There are no equivalency or “double jeopardy” concerns to be drawn from this whatsoever and surely Trump knows this.
