Donald Trump has announced that he’s the target of an investigation by special prosecutor Jack Smith over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. This means that Trump’s third indictment could be coming in the next couple of weeks and it could arguably include the most serious charges so far. Trump responded to the news with an all-caps rant on Truth Social, posting, “WITCH HUNT!!! CROOKED JOE BIDEN & HIS INJUSTICE DEPARTMENT WANT TO INDICT & ARREST HIS PRESUMED POLITICAL OPPONENT (ME!), WHO IS LEADING HIM IN THE POLLS IN THE UPCOMING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2024. SUCH A THING HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN OUR COUNTRY BEFORE…AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAMPAIGN??? ELECTION INTERFERENCE & PROSECUTORIAL MISCONDUCT!!!” If Trump is arrested again, there likely will be little to no impact on the Republican primary polling, based on how the electorate responded to his previous indictments. However, as these charges pile up there’s a stronger chance he’ll get convicted of something and maybe end up in prison, or at least be effectively unable to run for president
