Republicans are continuing down their authoritarian slide with a new requirement that future presidential nominees pledge not to participate in general election debates. This move is an attempt to stop the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates from being in charge of them, as RNC leadership argues they were unfair to Donald Trump in the 2020 race. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel sent a letter to the commission demanding changes be made.
She said, “The RNC has shared our concerns with the CPD in good faith . . . unfortunately, neither the tone nor substance of your latest response inspires confidence that the CPD will meaningfully address the serious issues which the RNC has raised.” Republicans anticipate at this point that they have nothing to gain from exchanging ideas with opposing candidates. If this calculation changes, they’ll gladly go right back to participating in them whether or not the Commission on Presidential Debates is still in charge.
