Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is expected to become a justice on the Supreme Court, and even Republicans like Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski are pledging their support for her. However, Republican senators outside of the moderate wing largely plan to oppose her approval to the bench, and many are struggling to come up with a justification for why. Jackson is immensely qualified, and in some ways, she’s more capable than any justice currently serving on the bench was at the time of their nominations. For example, Senator Roy Blunt from Missouri said on ABC’s “This Week” that he thinks it’ll be a “high point” for the country that the first black woman will be confirmed to the Supreme Court. However, he cannot support her because she views the laws and Constitution as “flexible.” Many progressive wish Judge Jackson had this “living document” view of the Constitution but based on her answers during the Senate hearings, what Blunt is saying is not valid, and he’s simply grasping at straws to come up with a reason not to support her.
