Last week, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham suggested on Twitter that someone assassinate Vladimir Putin. Graham tweeted, “Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military? The only way this end is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out.
You would be doing your country - and the world - a great service.” Graham got a lot of pushback over the tweet as it seemed rather careless for a senator to be making such a suggestion. If Putin was assassinated and there was American or European culpability for it, the result could be World War III. So Graham should have known better than to say this on Twitter. However, it’s certainly not outside the realm of what military and intelligence officers are thinking. If Putin was killed, it might bring about an immediate end to the Ukrainian invasion, but it’s impossible to say for sure. While it may make sense for a conversation like this to be happening strategically in backrooms, it’s not appropriate to be coming from a senator’s Twitter feed.
