In a viral clip, Kentucky State Senator Karen Berg confronted her colleagues, mostly Republican white men, about what their restrictive abortion bill would do to women in the state. The legislation seeks to ban abortion after the fifteenth week of pregnancy and is modeled after the Mississippi abortion law which is currently challenging Roe vs. Wade in the Supreme Court. During her statement, Berg said, “I look around at my colleagues on this committee. I am the only woman on this podium right now. I am the only physician sitting on this podium. This bill is a medical sham. It does not follow medicine. It does not even purport to listen to medicine.” Of course, for the lawmakers who voted yes on this legislation, it’s not actually about “following medicine,” it’s about achieving their generations-long commitment to shattering abortion rights in Kentucky and across the United States.
