Russia is now threatening American assets in response to the first round of sanctions against the country for invading Ukraine. Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said it would target sensitive US assets in a “strong” and “painful” response. The Russian agency called the sanctions part of America’s "ongoing attempts to change Russia's course.” The ministry went on to say, “there should be no doubt that sanctions will receive a strong response, not necessarily symmetrical, but finely tuned and painful to the American side.” This is in response to President Biden announcing on Tuesday that the first tranche of sanctions is underway against Russian banks, elites, and government insiders. Biden vowed to “continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates.” Now with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine underway, the economic blows between the US and Russia are almost certain to continue.
