Last Thursday, Russia attacked and took over the biggest nuclear power plant not only in Ukraine but in all of Europe. A fire spread at the training area of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power in an assault which the US Embassy in Ukraine called a “war crime.” Until the fire was put out, there was a major concern over a Chernobyl-like disaster resulting from the blaze. Radiation levels in the area remain normal so at least the worst possible outcome from this takeover has been avoided.
However, the plant generates around 20% of the electricity in Ukraine and now it’s under Russian control and could significantly help Vladimir Putin in his war effort. The damage resulting in the takeover of the power plant is just one example of the devastation being left behind in this incursion. Regardless of how this conflict ends, it’s going to take years or even decades to rebuild the infrastructure of Ukraine.
