There is a little-known epidemic in the United States is killing increasing numbers of people each year. It is little known because the victims are disproportionately poor and nonwhite. Pedestrian deaths have been rising steadily while driver and passenger deaths have remained largely unchanged. In a new book examining this grim trend, the policies that drive it, and what can be done about it is my guest Angie Schmitt.
Angie Schmitt is a renowned national expert on sustainable transportation in the US. She was a long-time national editor at Streetsblog, covering the movement for safe, multi-modal cities. Her writing has also appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, and more and her new book is called Right of Way: Race, Class and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths in America.
