Doug Mastriano, the Republican nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania, has been pictured wearing a Confederate soldier’s uniform and it’s leading several more establishment Republicans to back his Democratic challenger Josh Shapiro. The picture was taken next to other servicemen at the US Army War College. Faculty members were permitted to wear uniforms from historical periods and Mastriano jumped at the opportunity to wear Confederate garb. Seven more Republican leaders have now backed Shapiro believing Mastriano to be too extreme. They include Michael Chertoff, the former US Secretary of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush, and Mario Civera, a former state representative. Mastriano is down over seven points to Shapiro according to the FiveThirtyEight average and hopefully, this race doesn’t end up any closer than that.
