Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) went on Fox News Sunday and he had a really difficult time answering a question about gun control. Fox host Shannon Bream brought up polling about how gun safety measures are hugely popular among the American people. A Fox survey she cited found 88% of Americans want background checks, 82% want the legal age to own an assault rifle to be 21, and 81% support red flag laws. Bream asked the senator whether him being against these basic measures makes him “out of touch” with his constituents. Dumbfounded that he was getting such an adversarial question on Fox News, Lee went into a word salad answer about how it’s lawmakers’ jobs to look out for the specific rights of people and to put opinion polling into legislative text. Indeed Lee should be doing that then by supporting the rights of people not to live a society where people have easy accessibility to guns and by reflecting the will of the people to have common sense gun safety measures.
