For the last several years, Republicans have taken the route of focusing on culture war issues instead of substantive policy. This strategy has accelerated in the Trump and post-Trump era. As President Biden pointed out at his recent press conference, “think about this, what are Republicans for? What are they for? Name me one thing they’re for?” Case in point, Republican Senator Joni Ernst went on Jake Tapper’s CNN show last week but was unable to come up with an adequate response to a question about what the GOP supports.
Ernst said, “well I think that Republicans stand for a strong, free, and prosperous nation.” She went on to say conservatives would tackle inflation if they took power, but failed to say how. Ernst wrapped up her answer by talking about the need to do deal with “foreign relations with our allies” but failed to mention specific countries and how she would do that. They have no new policy ideas, but sadly people will vote for them anyway, and this zero policy strategy may even win them back power in 2022 and 2024.
