Progressives scored a massive victory in Saturday’s elections in Australia with the Labor Party’s Anthony Albanese poised to take over as the next Prime Minister. Votes are still coming in, but the incumbent centrist Liberal Party appears to have lost 24 seats, from 75 before the vote now down to only 51. A major issue in Australia this election cycle was climate change, which is shocking to hear coming from an American perspective. A huge component of Labor’s platform was to double the country’s 2030 target cuts to climate emissions and to be net-zero by 2050. They are promising to transition to renewable energy, update the nation’s energy grid, and roll out more solar banks and community batteries. In addition to climate change issues, Labor also ran on increasing the minimum wage, and funding child, elderly, and disability services. This is a major win for the progressive movement and the planet at large and we’ll see if they’re able to deliver on their ambitious climate promises.
