The Omicron variant, which has caused worldwide turmoil and panic over the past two weeks, may not be as severe as initially suspected. While Omicron appears to be as or more contagious than Delta, it appears that it’s not leading to a great deal of hospitalizations and deaths. The dream scenario would be that Omicron is more of a cold than a serious virus and has only around a 1% death rate, but time will tell. NIAID’s Dr. Anthony Fauci said about the Omicron variant on CNN last weekend, “thus far, it does not look like there’s a great degree of severity to it. But we have really got to be careful before we make any determinations that it is less severe or it really doesn’t cause any severe illness, comparable to Delta.” The truth is that it’s going to be a few more weeks before we know conclusively about the risk of this strain versus Delta and the previous ones. If there is still no spike in hospitalizations and deaths following the spike in infections, that suggests that Omicron won’t be of great concern relative to the other threats the public has weathered throughout this pandemic.
