Democrats have won back control of the United States Senate with their wins in the two Senate runoff elections in Georgia yesterday. Democrat Raphael Warnock defeated incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler by a margin of 55,000 votes. With two percent of the vote still outstanding, that margin is likely to grow in Warnock’s direction. The race between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican incumbent David Perdue has not been called yet, however Ossoff is now heavily favored to win. He is up currently by about 18,000 votes with two percent outstanding in heavily-Democratic areas. Ossoff will almost certainly be declared the winner today or later this week.
The two pickups in Georgia will provide the Democrats with fifty seats in the US Senate. While Republicans will also have fifty votes, Democrats will soon have control of the Vice Presidency with Kamala Harris and be able to break any ties in the chamber. This means that Joe Biden will be able to pass much of his agenda without constantly facing obstruction by Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell. This is a major success for Democrats and a major defeat for Republicans. Trump’s bogus election fraud claims and McConnell’s refusal to send $2,000 checks to Americans in need are already being blamed as some of the reasons why the GOP failed.
