Sonali Kolhatkar speaks with Lisa Featherstone about the New York City mayoral race.
In just a few weeks, New York City residents will vote for a new mayor, picking their top five candidates out of a field of 13 Democrats and 2 Republicans. Using ranked-choice voting for the very first time, New Yorkers are being asked to choose from a spectrum of candidates who are almost entirely without experience holding political office. Initially Andrew Yang, the insurgent presidential candidate from last year who campaigned on the idea of a Universal Basic Income, had surged to the top of the pack. But now, as concerns over crime are dominating headlines, the progressive favorite Maya Wiley who has said she would “defund the police” is going head-to-head against Eric Adams who has made tackling crime his top concern.
