This month, CNN launched a streaming service called “CNN+,” and it’s off to a miserable start. Subscribers get access to content like shows about Anderson Cooper’s parenting life and Jake Tapper’s book club for six dollars a month. Unfortunately for CNN, the service has been drawing fewer than 10,000 daily viewers despite an investment of over $100 million. This puts into doubt whether CNN+ will be able to continue if layoffs are soon to come and if the service will merge with something else owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. It also dramatically questions why the executives at CNN thought this would be a success since it’s not like the regular version of the network is getting flooded with viewers even though it’s essentially free to watch. This shows that it’s not as easy to break through in the new media landscape as some of these bigwigs at CNN may have believed.
