It’s important not to prematurely celebrate Joe Biden’s announcement of student debt relief of up to $20,000 per borrower, since there’s some chance that the move will end up getting blocked by the courts. The most likely way would be for a lawsuit to be brought by a citizen, although it’s not clear what type of plaintiff would have the standing to bring such a case. Maybe it would be someone who already paid off their student loans or someone who doesn’t qualify for relief since they make more than the $125,000 annual salary limit. Attorneys General in red states across the country, including Missouri, Texas, and Arizona, are already trying to figure out how to block the plan. The issue could ultimately be decided on by the heavily conservative Supreme Court which could likely come up with a reason to put a stop to it. This is predictably causing anxiety among people who stand to benefit from the relief and were just beginning to feel the weight of debt getting lifted off their shoulders.
