Herschel Walker, Republican nominee for US Senator from Georgia, is facing a scandal over allegations that he paid for an ex-girlfriend to get an abortion in 2009. The woman, who asked not to be identified, supported her claims with a $575 receipt from the abortion clinic, a bank deposit receipt from Walker, and a get-well card from the former football player. Walker allegedly told the woman at the time it would be “more convenient” to terminate the pregnancy than for her to have the child. Herschel has already faced controversy for being an absentee father to a number of children, but many on the right were willing to give him a pass on that. Now, he’s once again been exposed as a total hypocrite and has to do damage control. Walker went on Sean Hannity’s show and claimed that he didn’t know whether he knew the woman making the allegation, said he sends money to lots of people, and that this story is a distraction from the real issues of the day like immigration and inflation. We’ll know in the coming days whether this scandal makes any difference in the polls or if Republicans will once again hold their own to a different standard.
