Congressman Hakeem Jeffries was elected last week to replace Nancy Pelosi as the next leader of the House Democrats. Already, the right has been trying to paint Jeffries as some kind of an extreme radical, claiming that he is an election denier and supports abortion. At the same time, the left is criticizing Hakeem for not being progressive enough. In truth, Jeffries will likely be similar to Pelosi in how he leads the Democratic caucus. Representatives Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar also rose through the ranks of party leadership to get the #2 and #3 spots. Jeffries is 52, Clark is 50, and Aguilar is 43, showing an effort to move leadership in a younger direction as the three people they’re replacing are in their 80s.
