The National Guard has flooded Washington DC with personnel in preparation for the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The military is pulling out all the stops to prevent another event from taking place similar to the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th. DC now has more American troops than Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Perhaps more disturbing is that the military is growing concerned that some troops are more loyal to Trump than they are to the United States. The FBI is currently vetting active duty military members to make sure there is no pro-Trump attack that could come from inside the ranks.
Right-wing militancy penetrating law enforcement and the military has long been a concern, but one that has so often fallen on deaf ears. The Brennan Center for Justice has a detailed study about this called “Hidden in Plain Sight: Racism, White Supremacy, and Far-Right Militancy in Law Enforcement.” There is low risk of members of the National Guard actually turning on Joe Biden tomorrow to wage a coup against him. However, the fact that these talks are happening and that troops have to be reminded of their oaths of office is cause for concern.
**UPDATE: 12 troops have been removed from inaugural protection.
