Newly released emails reveal that Donald Trump pressured Justice Department officials to challenge the results of the 2020 election to help him stay in power. The New York Times reports that as soon as William Barr announced that he would be stepping down from his role as attorney general, Trump began badgering Barr’s replacement to have the Justice Department take up his election fraud claims. This is all coming to light thanks to the House Oversight Committee getting ahold of more than 200 pages of emails from Justice Department and White House officials. In the emails, Trump expressed interest in getting the Supreme Court to nullify the election results. The former president’s assistant sent emails to then-Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen arguing there was a “cover-up” in Michigan’s election followed up by promoting Rosen to take Barr’s spot and become Acting Attorney General.
Even all this time removed from the 2020 election, we are still coming across stories of the former president abusing his power and trying to stay in office after losing. We already knew that Trump was trying to pressure state officials to overturn the results, as evidenced by the phone call wherein Trump pressured the Georgia Secretary of State to “find 11,780 votes” so that he could win there. He also sent surrogates like Rudy Giuliani around the country to try to convince state legislatures not to certify election results despite having no proof or legal justification for doing so. And all of these Trump supporters who claim to be about the rule of law and respecting American institutions continue to look the other way. At this point, nothing will convince them they were wrong to be on Trump’s side on this.
