Tuesday was Election Day 2021 in the United States and the overall results were not positive for Democrats and the progressive movement. The race that got the most attention was the Virginia gubernatorial election, which polling had as a dead heat between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin. Although results are still coming in, the race has been called for Youngkin, who is currently up by a margin of about two percentage points. For the last decade, Virginia has been a reliably blue state, so this flip is a bad sign looking ahead to the 2022 midterms. There was also a governor’s race in New Jersey that Democratic incumbent Phil Murphy was supposed to run away with. Instead, the race hasn’t even been called yet, and though Murphy is expected to defeat his Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli, it’s going to be by a small margin. These races should be wake up calls for Democrats who have been losing the messaging and enthusiasm battle ever since Joe Biden took office. If there is not a course correction between now and next November, Democrats are poised to lose more governorships, the House of Representatives, and possibly even the Senate.
