Tennessee Governor Bill Lee got into an altercation with a reporter about his hypocrisy on the issue of dressing in drag. Lee, like many Republicans around the country, has been supporting anti-drug and anti-trans legislation in order to feed into the culture war and satisfy the right-wing base. The Tennessee bill that Lee supports would ban drag performances in public and require children to undergo therapy if they express gender non-conforming behavior. During the press conference, a photo of Lee dressed in drag from his high school yearbook was shown to him, causing the governor to panic. He said, “what a ridiculous question that is. Conflating something like that to sexualized entertainment in front of children, which is a very serious subject.” The reporter accurately fired back that drag is not inherently sexual. Later on, the reporters got to the root of the issue which is that this is a way to target the LGBT community and that Bill Lee is a total hypocrite on this issue.
