Dr. Deborah Birx gave a testimony to the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis and said that she believed over 130,000 lives could have been saved if Donald Trump had provided a proper response to the pandemic. The former White House COVID-19 response coordinator said during her mid-October testimony that she did not believe then-President Trump did everything he could to stop the spread of the virus and save lives. Birx said, “I believe if we had fully implemented the mask mandates, the reduction in indoor dining, the getting friends and family to understand the risk of gathering in private homes, and we had increased testing, that we probably could have decreased fatalities into the 30% less to 40% less range.” Dr. Birx went on to explain that Trump’s obsession with the 2020 election and its aftermath took precedent in his administration over fighting the virus during last year’s fall and winter wave which saw the worst case and deaths rates of the entire pandemic. Trump has so far not responded to Birx’s comments, but given his long history of lashing out against former subordinates, he’ll likely come out with a statement on this revelation very soon.
