The Department of Justice will be starting a formal investigation into the fifteen boxes of White House records that Donald Trump stowed away at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Some of these records were labeled “top secret,” which adds a layer of irony to all of this because Trump supporters argued in 2016 that Hillary Clinton couldn’t be trusted with sensitive information. This investigation is in its early stages, and there’s no indication whether it will go anywhere or if it will lead to no action like many other probes into Trump’s alleged wrongdoing. Democratic lawmakers have grown frustrated with Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Justice Department for not going after the former president more directly and even obstructing investigations by congressional committees. Even though these allegations would likely lead to charges for anybody else, Trump will probably get away with it.
