Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein is facing pressure to resign due to her absence from the Senate committee since early March with shingles, which has resulted in her missing 60 votes. Her absence is preventing Biden's judicial nominees from being confirmed as they require her vote to move out of the committee. Feinstein has already announced that this will be her last term in office and that she will not seek reelection in 2024. However, given her extended absence and concerns about her cognitive state, it might be best for the Democratic Party if she steps down. Three Democratic congresspeople are running in the Senate primary next year, and since they cannot simultaneously run for their House seats, two of them will no longer be elected officials after the race. This could end up meaning that Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, two champions of the progressive movement, could be out of office in the next Congress. If Feinstein was to step down, California Governor Gavin Newsom would appoint a replacement. That person could be the presumptive winner for the ‘24 race and ensure that Porter and/or Lee remains as valuable voices in the House of Representatives.
