We speak live with Keith LaMar, a death row inmate at the Ohio State Penitentiary, following the release of The Injustice of Justice—a short film highlighting his case that recently won the grand prize for Best Animated Short Film at the Golden State Film Festival. LaMar, who has consistently maintained his innocence, reflects on his decades-long struggle against a system that he believes wrongfully condemned him. “I had to learn the hard way that taking control of my life meant standing up and claiming it,” he says. Convicted for his alleged role in the deaths of five inmates during a 1993 prison uprising, LaMar was tried before an all-white jury in a remote Ohio community. After spending more than 30 years in solitary confinement, he now faces an execution date of January 13, 2027. His attorney, Keegan Stephan, shares that newly uncovered evidence could open pathways to overturn the conviction.
